This is the title page for the spring section of the Hortus Eystettensis, published in 1613. It reads 'Plantarum Horti Eystettensis Classis Verna'. It is an engraving with hand colouring, and it is decorated with allegorical figures, columns, a coat of arms and a few objects associated with an apothecary. The image is taken from the book page itself, so the paper margins remain visible. Basilius Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, is best known for this florilegium. The page opens the book's spring plants in a richly decorated architectural frame.
On your wall: Its detailed, book-page character suits a study, library, hallway or any calm room where botanical prints and traditional decoration are welcome.
