This is a painted engraving of a rose by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, dated 1824. It belongs to his Les Roses, and the title names the plant as a form of Rosa gallica. Redouté was a painter and botanist, and the work sits within the tradition of botanical illustration, where the flower is studied and shown as a subject in its own right. He is known for his rose, lily and other flower studies, many of them published as large coloured stipple engravings.
On your wall: A rose study like this suits a living room, bedroom, hallway or study, especially where a calm, traditional or botanical look is wanted.
