About this artwork

Sargent painted this view of thistles and herbage on a hillside in Valdemosa, Majorca, in 1908. Rather than a grand vista, he turned his attention to the plants growing on the slope, so the eye settles on leaf, stalk and spiky flower head. It is an oil painting on canvas. Sargent is best known as a portrait painter, but his work also records a lifetime of travel, and this quiet study of the Majorcan landscape shows his interest in the natural world beyond the sitter's chair.

On your wall: Its natural subject and landscape feel suit a living room, study or hallway, and sit well beside plants, wood and other calm, earthy furnishings.
