John Singer Sargent, 1909
Sargent turns his watercolour eye to Venice, where the Dogana and its statue of Fortune catch the light above the water.

This is a watercolour by John Singer Sargent, painted around 1909 to 1911 over a preliminary pencil sketch on paper. It shows the Dogana da mar in Venice, the old sea customs house, and the statue of Fortune by Bernardo Falconi that stands above it. Sargent was best known as a portrait painter, yet he also made more than 2,000 watercolours, and Venice was among the places he returned to in them. The work is small in scale, measuring about 48 by 35 centimetres, and it remains in a private collection.
On your wall: Its Venetian subject and the light touch of watercolour suit a study, hallway, sitting room or bedroom, especially where a calm, travel-inspired picture is wanted.
