John Singer Sargent, 1912
Sunlight filters through an olive grove on Corfu, where twisted trunks, an orange tree and resting goats share a quiet corner of the landscape.

John Singer Sargent's oil sketch gives us a sunlit olive grove on Corfu. The olive trunks twist and turn across the scene, and an orange tree stands among them. A rustic wooden fence runs through the grove, and several goats rest in the grass. The work is oil on canvas, and its sketch-like handling suits a scene built from light, foliage and the easy stillness of animals at rest. Sargent travelled widely, and Corfu was one of the places he painted.
On your wall: Its sunlit greens and gentle rural subject would suit a calm living room, a dining area or a hallway, especially where you'd like a touch of Mediterranean light.
