About this artwork

Childe Hassam painted this work in 1886, using oil paint on canvas. As the title tells us, it shows a nymph resting on a rocky ledge, a subject drawn from mythology and set among stone. Hassam is best known as an American Impressionist, celebrated for his urban and coastal scenes, so this figure study offers a different side of his output. He worked across oils, watercolours, etchings and lithographs, and helped introduce Impressionism to American collectors, dealers and museums.

On your wall: A mythological figure in a natural setting suits a quiet bedroom, a reading corner or a study, where it can add a calm, classical note.
