Vincent van Gogh, 1889
Autumn leaves turning yellow above a village street, where workers mend the pavement beneath enormous plane trees.

Van Gogh painted this autumn scene in 1889, while living in a psychiatric hospital near Saint-Rémy in southern France, where he was being treated for severe depression. His physician had seen that painting from nature eased his symptoms and allowed him to work outdoors on landscapes. He described the picture to his brother Theo as a view of the village, with men repairing the pavements under huge plane trees. There are heaps of sand and stones, thick towering trunks and yellowing leaves, and here and there a glimpse of a house front and small figures. It is oil on fabric.
On your wall: The yellowing leaves and tall trunks suit a living room, study or hallway where a calm, autumnal landscape can bring a little natural warmth.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
