Philipp Hackert, 1803
A wide view over the Gulf of Pozzuoli, seen from the slopes above the Solfatara, where volcanic steam rises from the ground.

Philipp Hackert painted this view in 1803 in oil on canvas. It looks west toward the Gulf of Pozzuoli from just above the Solfatara, an area of volcanic steam vents. In the distance lies the ancient town of Pozzuoli, where the apostle Paul is said to have landed on his way to Rome. Landscape painters of the 1700s and 1800s were drawn to the countryside around Naples for its dramatic vistas, volcanoes and classical ruins. Hackert's close attention to detail and his remarkably clear rendering of form are characteristic of German Romantic painting.
On your wall: Its open coastal view suits a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a calm, detailed landscape can draw the eye into the distance.

Jacob Philipp Hackert was a landscape painter from Brandenburg who spent most of his working life in Italy. Landscape was the heart of his art, and his canvases show the Italian countryside through the eyes of an artist who had made that country his working home.
