An alpine lake lies framed by steep mountains and snowy peaks, with dark firs and a grassy path leading the eye in.

Alexandre Calame, a Swiss landscape painter associated with the Düsseldorf School, shows Lake Lucerne with the Urirotstock rising beyond the water. Steep mountains and snow-covered peaks frame the lake, while dark fir trees and a grassy hillside path fill the foreground. The path draws you from the near slope towards the water and the mountains behind. The work is dated 1857/61.
On your wall: Its deep greens, cool mountain tones and calm lake suit a living room, study or hallway where a quiet, open view of the Alps is welcome.
