Workshop of Rembrandt van Rijn, 1645
A young woman glances sideways from an open half-door, a hint of a smile at the corner of her mouth. It is a small, playful moment from 1645.

A young woman looks out from behind an open half-door, her glance turned to one side and her mouth lifted in a faint, ambiguous smile. The picture belongs to the tradition of character studies that Rembrandt van Rijn called tronies, and it uses the doorway as a clever frame around the figure. It is painted in oil on canvas and dated 1645. The composition is fairly flat, which suggests it came from Rembrandt's busy workshop rather than from his own hand. It was probably then issued as a studio work, carrying the artist's signature and date. It is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its sense of quiet humour and its figure-in-a-doorway subject suit a hallway, study or sitting room, especially alongside traditional furnishings.
