About this artwork

Valentin de Boulogne painted Samson in oil on canvas around 1630–31. The biblical hero rests his head on his hand, his pose pensive and almost melancholic. Objects on the table recall two of his deeds: killing a lion with his bare hands, and freeing the Israelites by defeating a thousand Philistines with a donkey's jawbone. His breastplate is fastened at the shoulder by a clasp shaped like two bees, the emblem of the Barberini family, who commissioned the work. Valentin had already been engaged by them in 1627 to paint David victorious with the head of Goliath, and this Samson was designed as its pendant.

On your wall: Its serious mood and figure-led subject suit a study, library, dining room or quiet sitting room where a classic, contemplative piece can hold the wall.

About Valentin de Boulogne

Valentin de Boulogne, sometimes known as Le Valentin, was a French painter who worked in the tenebrist style. This approach is marked by strong contrasts between deep shadow and pools of light, giving a picture a quiet drama. His name is closely tied to that dramatic handling of darkness.
