Peter Paul Rubens, 1615
Diana steps towards us, her nymphs close behind, in a scene where beauty and restraint meet. Rubens brings the figures right to the front of the picture.

Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, is recognisable by the crescent on her forehead, which also marks her as goddess of the moon. She lived apart from men with a company of nymphs, and she often stood for unattainable beauty or chastity. At the left, a nymph fends off a lustful satyr, hinting at a struggle between vice and virtue. Rubens paints the full-bodied figures close to the front of the picture, and Diana steps forward, drawing us into the scene. The nymph at the right has the features of Isabella Brant, the artist's wife. Painted in oil on canvas in Flanders, around 1615.
On your wall: Its large, lively figures suit a living room, dining room or study where a classical, story-rich painting can hold the eye and spark conversation.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat, regarded as the most influential figure in Flemish Baroque painting. His richly charged compositions drew on classical and Christian history, and his style prized movement, colour and sensuality. He painted altarpieces, portraits, landscapes and mythological or allegorical scenes, and also designed tapestry cartoons and book frontispieces for Antwerp publishers.
