Jean François de Troy, 1720
A nymph on the run and a god in pursuit: de Troy paints a moment from Ovid's myth, just before a river's edge and a change into reeds.

Painted in France in 1720, this oil on canvas shows the myth of Pan and Syrinx, as told by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The nymph Syrinx flees the unwelcome advances of the god Pan. Trapped at the edge of a river, she begs for a way out, and the gods turn her into reeds. Pan later gathers them to make the pan pipes, the instrument still linked with his name. De Troy's rich colours and full-figured bodies suited the love-themed mythologies favoured by his elite patrons. Such subjects asked a painter to handle the body in demanding poses and to interpret ancient texts with imagination.
On your wall: Its rich colours and classical subject suit a living room, dining room or study, especially where traditional furnishings or a quietly dramatic focal point are wanted.

Jean-François de Troy was a French Rococo painter who worked in oil and fresco, and also as a draughtsman and tapestry designer. He ranked among the leading history painters of his time, yet found equal success with decorative works, genre scenes and portraits. He is credited with inventing the tableaux de modes, lively depictions of contemporary fashions, pastimes and manners.
