About this artwork

Gérôme shows a mountain peak near Handegg, with tall fir trees and boulders in a shadowed foreground. Beyond them, light falls on the sky and the snowcapped mountains. The trees stretch almost to the top of the picture, rising like church steeples, and give the scene a feeling of spiritual striving. It is an oil sketch, painted on fabric in the 1850s. The romantic, almost religious feeling it expresses before the power and beauty of nature is surprising for Gérôme, who was one of the leading artists of academic realism, a style known for firm, precise drawing.

On your wall: Its deep shadowed greens against blue sky and white peaks suit a study, a living room or a hallway where a calm, uplifting mountain view is welcome.
