Ivan Aivazovsky, 1884
A steamship rests at anchor beneath the moon, its light shimmering across the water while small boats gather close by.

Painted in 1884 in oil on canvas, this is a lively coastal scene by night. A steamship lies at anchor in what appears to be the Bay of Yalta, with several boats full of people around it. Moonlight on the sea was a favourite subject of Aivazovsky, who used the glittering path of reflected light both to light the scene and to give it depth and perspective. Steamships appear only in his later work, as he generally preferred to paint traditional wooden sailing ships, which makes this a particularly interesting example.
On your wall: The calm night-time sea and glowing moonlight suit a living room, study or bedroom where a quiet, atmospheric landscape is welcome.
