This hanging scroll shows a white plum, also called prunus, together with bamboo, painted in ink on paper by Sesson Shūkei in the 1500s, during Japan's Muromachi period. It was once the side panel of a triptych. The central image showed Zhong Kui, the demon-queller, and the other side held a red plum with bamboo. Together they suited the start of the new year, when Zhong Kui was believed to drive out evil spirits and the first flowers were opening. Sesson was a Zen monk from what is now Ibaraki prefecture, who worked largely in the Kanto region. He developed a distinctive style, free of formal training in the Kano atelier.
