This illustration of Octopus vulgaris, the common octopus, was made by Ernst Haeckel in 1904. It belongs to his Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature) and appears on plate 54, which is titled Gamochonia. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist who also worked as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species during his career. His training as a scientist and his skill as an artist meet in this work, which treats a sea creature as a subject worth close and patient looking.
