This illustration shows Octopus vulgaris, the common octopus, as named in its title. It comes from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, where it appears as plate 54, grouped under the heading Gamochonia. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist who also worked as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species during his career. His plates join close observation of living things with a strong sense of composition, and this one carries that approach into the world of sea creatures.
On your wall: Its marine subject and natural-history character suit a study, hallway or reading room, and sit well beside botanical prints in a considered collection.
