About this artwork

This is one of two portraits Manet made of Berthe Morisot wearing winter clothes: a heavy coat and a feathered hat. Here she also holds a muff, as the title tells us. Manet used wide brushstrokes and crosshatched marks to build up the areas of shadow. This loose, sketch-like handling recalls the way Morisot herself painted, and it was probably his way of acknowledging her as an artist as well as his sitter. The work is oil on canvas, dated to about 1871–72, and a companion portrait shows her with a half veil.

On your wall: A quietly characterful portrait that suits a study, living room, hallway or bedroom, particularly where you enjoy figurative art with an expressive, painterly touch.
