Vincent van Gogh, 1889
A small bedroom in Arles, painted in pale lilac, chrome yellow and blood-red, with sharply tilting lines that Van Gogh meant to feel restful.

This is Van Gogh's own sleeping quarters in the Yellow House in Arles, France. He first conceived the scene in October 1888, a month after moving in, and described the colours to his brother Theo: pale lilac walls, a faded red floor, chrome yellow bed and chairs, a blood-red bedspread, an orange dressing table and a green window. This version, the second, was made nearly a year later, in September 1889, in oil on canvas. A third, smaller one was painted at the same time as a gift for his mother and sister. The bold colour, thick, broken brushwork and steeply receding lines can feel full of nervous energy, yet Van Gogh saw the picture as calm and restful.
On your wall: Its warm yellows and soft lilac suit bedrooms especially well, and bring colour to a hallway, a reading corner or a small study.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
