About this artwork

Known in the Musée d'Orsay as The Siesta, after Millet, this oil on canvas shows a midday rest in the fields. Haystacks, open ground and sky make up the scene, with a pair of clogs set down nearby as the workers lie back to sleep. Van Gogh painted it between December 1889 and January 1890, while he was staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. As the title tells us, it follows a composition by Millet, and Van Gogh reworks it in his own colour and brushwork. The painting belongs to the permanent collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

On your wall: Its restful, rural subject suits a living room, bedroom or reading corner, where it adds a calm, countryside mood.
