About this artwork

Pissarro painted this bustling fish market in the summer of 1902, as part of a series set in the harbour at Dieppe. He looks down on the scene from a high vantage point, an approach the Impressionists often used when portraying the modern city. The picture is enlivened by rich, vibrant colour and energetic, broken brushstrokes. Pissarro was always attentive to the fleeting effects of atmosphere, and here he lets industrial steam merge with the clouds in a brilliant, sunlit sky. The work is oil on canvas.

On your wall: Its vibrant colours and lively harbour scene would bring energy to a dining room, hallway or living space, and suit anyone who enjoys Impressionist city views.
