Verkade painted this landscape in oil on canvas in 1891–92, during the years he spent travelling to Brittany, in northwestern France. The terrain there was very different from what he knew in Amsterdam, and it inspired him to paint a series of Breton landscapes. Brittany mattered to him in more than one way: it was also there that he converted to Catholicism. That change gradually moved his work away from landscape and towards religious and sacred art, which makes this picture part of a brief and distinctive chapter in his career.
On your wall: A calm landscape that suits a living room, study or hallway, particularly where you would like a quiet view of the countryside.
