About this artwork

Friedrich sets a stone cairn, also called a dolmen, on a hilltop among three oak trees in deep snow. The trees are leafless: two have their tops broken off, and the third is bent by the prevailing wind. This gives the scene a haunted, spectral air and a contemplative, melancholy mood. It is a Romantic allegorical landscape, painted in oil on canvas and measuring 61 by 80 centimetres. It was probably painted around 1807, which makes it one of Friedrich's first oil paintings. Since 1905 it has been held by the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden.

On your wall: Its wintry subject and hushed mood suit a study, a quiet bedroom or a reading corner, where a contemplative landscape can be looked at slowly.

About Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His work is often symbolic and turns away from classical ideals, expressing a personal, emotional response to nature. He frequently painted contemplative figures set against night skies, morning mists, bare trees or Gothic ruins.
