Coloured Forms I was painted by August Macke in 1913 in oil paint. The title points to what matters here: shapes and colour set against one another, rather than a scene to be read. Macke was a German Expressionist and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter, and he worked at a time when new avant-garde ideas were arriving from across Europe. He took from them the elements that interested him most and brought them into his own painting. The work belongs to the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History.
On your wall: Its focus on colour and form suits a living room, study or hallway where a modern, abstract piece can set the tone for the space.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
