Macke's 1913 painting shows women in a park, with a white parasol giving the scene its title. It belongs to a period when he was working among the artists of Der Blaue Reiter, the group of German Expressionists he was a leading member of. Macke took from the avant-garde whatever interested him most and folded it into his own painting. The work is now in a private collection. He was one of the young German artists who died in the First World War, which makes the paintings from these years all the more poignant.
On your wall: A park scene with a pale parasol at its centre suits a living room, hallway or bedroom, especially where you want a modern, relaxed touch.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
