Painted in 1913, this oil on canvas brings together bathing girls and a city in the background, so figures and urban skyline share one scene. August Macke was a German Expressionist and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter. He worked at a time of great activity in German art, and he took from the avant-garde those elements that interested him most. The work belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
On your wall: Its blend of figures and cityscape suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern, abstract picture can bring a sense of movement to the wall.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
