Juan Gris painted this view of Céret in September 1913. The title points to a landscape with houses, and Gris approaches it as a Cubist, a movement closely tied to his name. The picture measures 100 by 65 cm, a tall upright format. Gris was a Spanish painter born in Madrid who spent most of his working life in France, and his Cubist work is among the most distinctive of the movement. This canvas is held in a private collection.
On your wall: Its upright format and Cubist treatment of a townscape suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, abstract landscape can sit alongside simple, uncluttered furnishings.
