Composition XX was painted by Theo van Doesburg in 1920 in oil on canvas. It belongs to the tradition of abstract art, where the picture is built from shape and colour rather than from a recognisable scene. Van Doesburg was a Dutch painter, writer, poet and architect, and is best known as the founder and leader of De Stijl. The painting is now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
On your wall: As an abstract work from the early twentieth century, it suits modern interiors such as living rooms, studies and offices, where its composition can stand out against plain walls.

Theo van Doesburg was a Dutch painter, writer, poet and architect, working across several fields rather than just one. He is best remembered as the founder and leader of De Stijl, the movement with which his name remains closely linked. His art and ideas offer a thoughtful starting point for anyone drawn to that way of seeing.
