About this artwork

Mondrian belonged to De Stijl and believed that the straight line tells the truth. Here he turns the canvas so that it hangs as a lozenge, its edges forming diagonals. The tilt let him explore how a painting relates to what holds it in. Most of the black lines stop short, suggesting enclosure, but one line above the blue area reaches the slanted edge and hints at space beyond the picture. Mondrian also hung diagonal works well above eye level, so that they seemed to draw in the whole wall. It is an oil on canvas from 1921, made in the Netherlands.

On your wall: Its clean black lines and blocks of yellow, blue, red and grey suit modern interiors, such as a bright living room, a studio or a minimalist study.
