About this artwork

This oil on canvas by Edvard Munch is a landscape of a sunrise in Norway, and it belongs to his group of paintings on the theme of the sun. The work dates from around 1912 to 1913. It is held today in the Munchmuseet. Munch is best known to many people for The Scream of 1893, yet here his attention turns to the daylight and the open sky. It offers a calmer way into his work, built around the moment the sun comes up over the land.

On your wall: A rising sun suits bright living rooms, calm bedrooms and entrance halls, where the sense of morning light can lift a plain wall.
