This is a gouache design by Theo van Doesburg, made in 1927 as the final colour scheme for the ceiling of the Ciné-Dancing of the Aubette. Rectangles are set at a diagonal and coloured in red, yellow and blue alongside grey, black and white. A grey border contains them, and a black stepped edge runs around the sheet. The tilted arrangement gives the composition a sense of movement, which is quite different from a conventional horizontal and vertical grid.
On your wall: Its bold primary colours and crisp geometry suit modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where neutral walls let the colour stand out.

Theo van Doesburg was a Dutch painter, writer, poet and architect, working across several fields rather than just one. He is best remembered as the founder and leader of De Stijl, the movement with which his name remains closely linked. His art and ideas offer a thoughtful starting point for anyone drawn to that way of seeing.
