This work by Itō Jakuchū takes the crested myna as its subject, a bird in keeping with the artist's long-standing interest in chickens and other birds. Jakuchū worked in Japan during the mid-Edo period, when the country had isolated itself from the outside world. Much of his work treats traditional Japanese subjects, yet it often shows a willingness to experiment with perspective and with strikingly modern stylistic touches. The painting is held in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
On your wall: A bird study like this suits a study, hallway or bedroom, and sits well in calm spaces with Japanese-inspired or otherwise understated decor.

Itō Jakuchū was a Japanese painter who worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan had closed itself off from the outside world. Many of his paintings take traditional Japanese subjects, chickens and other birds above all. Though rooted in tradition, much of his work experiments boldly with perspective and shows strikingly modern stylistic touches.
