Painted in 1789 by Itō Jakuchū, this work takes the Five Hundred Arhats as its subject, the many followers in Buddhist tradition who are honoured as enlightened disciples. It is held today in the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia, where it is counted among the Japanese paintings in the collection. Jakuchū worked in the mid-Edo period, and although he is best known for his chickens and other birds, his traditional subjects often show a willingness to experiment with perspective. That inventive spirit makes this a rewarding picture to study closely.
On your wall: Its calm, contemplative subject suits a study, a reading corner, a quiet hallway or a living room where a thoughtful piece of Japanese art can be enjoyed at leisure.

Itō Jakuchū was a Japanese painter who worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan had closed itself off from the outside world. Many of his paintings take traditional Japanese subjects, chickens and other birds above all. Though rooted in tradition, much of his work experiments boldly with perspective and shows strikingly modern stylistic touches.
