Kazimir Malevich, 1928
Four upright, faceless figures stand side by side in blocks of colour, drawn with a calm, spare clarity.

Four figures stand frontally in a row, each held stiff and still. Their heads are left without faces, and their clothing is built from flat blocks of colour. Behind them, a pale background is divided by horizontal bands, which gives the scene a quiet, ordered structure. Malevich, a pioneer of abstract painting in the twentieth century, reduces the human form here to simple shapes and colour. The title, De Sportlieden, points to sportsmen.
On your wall: Its pale ground and clean blocks of colour suit modern living rooms, studies and hallways where a restrained, graphic touch is wanted.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
