Piet Mondrian, 1933
Black lines, white space, one blue block and a strip of yellow: Mondrian's 1933 composition says everything with almost nothing.

Painted in 1933 in oil on canvas, this is an abstract composition by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. A grid of black lines divides a white ground into rectangles. A blue rectangle sits at the top right, while a yellow strip runs along the bottom left. Mondrian worked with simple geometric elements, and here the balance between colour, line and empty space carries the whole picture. Nothing is represented, so the eye moves freely from one block of colour to the next, settling on the careful placement of each.
On your wall: Its white ground, black lines and restrained blue and yellow suit minimalist living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where clean lines and plenty of light are wanted.
