This is plate 24 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904. It shows many desmids, a kind of green algae, arranged together on one sheet, each form drawn separately so that its shape can be studied. The plate was produced as a colour lithograph, and the original sheet measures 36 by 26 cm. The German caption reads 'Desmidiea. — Zierdinge'. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and the plate reflects both sides of his work, combining careful observation with a strong sense of design.
On your wall: Its fresh greens and botanical subject suit studies, living rooms, kitchens and hallways, especially alongside natural materials, plants and calm, light-filled interiors.
