This plate shows a spotted redshank, a wading bird, and comes from the fourth volume of John Gould's The Birds of Europe. That volume covers the game birds and the waders, and it was issued in parts between 1832 and 1837. The work was printed in London by R. and J.E. Taylor and published by Gould himself. Gould was an English ornithologist who produced bird monographs with plates by several artists, so the image belongs to a larger body of natural history illustration.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
