This colour woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu, dated March 1934, looks across to a wooden temple standing in Lake Biwa. We view it from the snow-covered shore, while snow falls through the night and a lantern lights the building. The print was made with a black line block and separate blocks of colour, printed on paper. Watanabe Shozaburo published it in Tokyo. Koitsu worked in the Shin-hanga movement, and his later work is known for its use of light to heighten mood, which suits this nocturnal scene. The sheet measures 390 by 261 mm.
On your wall: Its calm night-time scene of snow and lantern light suits quiet spaces such as a bedroom, study or hallway, where it adds a restful, contemplative note.

Tsuchiya Kōitsu was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement. He spent 19 years training under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, and his early work focused on scenes from the First Sino-Japanese War. In 1931, aged 60, he began working for the publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe. His later prints use light to deepen their emotional effect.
