About this artwork

This is a woodblock print from 1925 by Hiroshi Yoshida, titled Jungfrau. The title points to the Alpine mountain of that name, and the print belongs to his landscape work. Yoshida is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style. He travelled widely and was particularly known for images of places outside Japan, including the Swiss Alps, made in the traditional Japanese woodblock manner. The print brings those two worlds together, with an Alpine subject seen through Japanese printmaking.

On your wall: A mountain landscape like this suits a calm living room, study or hallway, especially where you enjoy travel-minded art or a quiet link between Japanese and Alpine traditions.
