About this artwork

Hiroshige made this colour woodcut in 1857. It belongs to his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and its subject is the open garden at the Hachiman Shrine in Fukagawa. The print is upright in format, measuring 33.6 by 22.1 centimetres. Hiroshige is regarded as the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, and this view of a shrine garden gives a glimpse of the sort of place that made up the city in his series.

On your wall: Its upright format and shrine-garden subject suit a hallway, study or quiet corner, and sit comfortably in calm, simply furnished rooms.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
