About this artwork

Here Hokusai shows Mount Fuji with a calm, clear sky around its summit and a storm raging near its base. The gentle, sloping sides of the volcano sit against sharp, jagged streaks of lightning below, giving the scene great simplicity and visual force. It is a colour woodblock print in the large oban format, and belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, created when he was past seventy. The series in fact grew to forty-six views, and shows the mountain from a remarkable variety of vantage points. Fuji had long been revered as a sacred mountain, and in Hokusai's day pilgrims travelled to it from across Japan.

On your wall: Its strong, simple composition of mountain and lightning suits a living room, study or hallway where a calm yet dramatic Japanese landscape can stand on its own.
