About this artwork

Piet Mondrian painted this abstract work in 1941, and its title notes that it was left unfinished. He built it from oil paint, pencil and chalk stick on canvas, so the drawn marks are part of what you see alongside the paint. Mondrian moved over the years from figurative painting towards an increasingly abstract style, reducing his vocabulary to simple geometric elements. This piece belongs to that line of thought. It is now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, having passed through the Sidney Janis Gallery and the Thyssen-Bornemisza family collection.

On your wall: Its geometric, abstract character suits calm, modern interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where clean lines and uncluttered walls are wanted.
