Painted in oils on canvas in 1946, this portrait shows a young woman in a white dress, shown at full length in a reclining pose, with a fur coat also visible. Behind her, the background is a strong red, which sets off the white of her clothing. The work is an interior scene as well as a portrait, and it belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon. Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour and his fluid, original draughtsmanship, and both qualities are easy to look for here.
On your wall: The red and white palette and the reclining figure suit a living room, bedroom or study, especially where a single bold colour is wanted against calmer, neutral walls.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, best known as a painter, though he also worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His art is admired for its bold use of colour and for a fluid, original approach to drawing. Both qualities give his work a distinctive character that remains easy to recognise.
