Materia was painted by Umberto Boccioni in 1912, in oil on canvas. It belongs to Futurism, the movement Boccioni helped to shape as one of its principal figures. His work is known for its interest in the dynamism of form and the breaking apart of solid mass, and those concerns make a fitting way into this painting. The work is held in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and it is displayed at the Museo del Novecento. Boccioni lived only a short time, yet his approach to movement and form continued to guide other artists long after his death.
On your wall: Its abstract, modern character suits a living room, study or studio where a strong piece of early twentieth-century art can anchor a contemporary space.
