Bauhaustreppe, known in English as Bauhaus Stairway, is an oil painting on canvas that Oskar Schlemmer completed in 1932. It shows students climbing the stairs at the Bauhaus, the German art school. All but one of the figures walk away from the viewer, so we follow the group as it ascends. The school closed in 1933, after the Nazis took power, which gives this scene of everyday movement through the building a particular place in history. The painting is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
On your wall: Its theme of ascent and its modern, architectural subject suit a study, hallway, staircase wall or living room with a contemporary, design-minded feel.
