Albert Gleizes painted this work in France in 1947. Its title, Composition ou Construction, suggests a picture built with deliberate order, where arrangement matters as much as subject. Gleizes was a French artist and theorist who called himself a founder of Cubism, and he co-wrote the first major treatise on the movement, Du "Cubisme", in 1912. He wrote at length about painting and its principles, and he helped shape modern art in both Europe and America. Seen in that light, this canvas invites you to follow how forms are put together and how the whole is held in balance.
On your wall: Suited to a study, living room or hallway where a modern, abstract piece with a structured, considered character can sit comfortably among clean lines and contemporary furnishings.
