This is a landscape view of Kairouan, made by August Macke in 1914. He worked in watercolour and pencil, a combination that suits a light, immediate way of setting down a place. Macke was a German Expressionist and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, and this work belongs to the later part of his short career. The original is held in the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History in Münster.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract spirit and light watercolour treatment suit living rooms, studies and quiet hallways where a calm landscape can sit comfortably.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
