A temple in India, photographed in 1857 by a doctor who turned his camera on ancient monuments. The stonework rewards a slow look.

William Henry Pigou was a medical doctor and an amateur photographer. In 1856 and 1857 he worked for the British colonial government, recording ancient monuments across India. This view of the temple at Kirwuttee, now spelt Kuruvatti, was made around two years after photography first arrived in the country. The building is decorated mostly with miniature temple models across its exterior, with only a few figures carved among them. Pigou made the image as an albumen print from a paper negative, a process typical of early photography, which gives the surface its soft tonal range.
On your wall: Its quiet black-and-white tones and architectural subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where a considered, historical feel is wanted.
