About this artwork

This photograph shows the main facade of the Sainte-Pélagie prison in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. The large stone building stretches along a cobbled street, with a guard box and a few figures standing in front of it. The prison was demolished in 1899, so Atget's picture records it close to the end of its life. It is a positive albumen print made from a glass negative, which gives the image its warm, sepia tone. The work fits Atget's wider aim of documenting the architecture and streets of Paris before they were lost to modernisation.

On your wall: The warm sepia tones and architectural subject suit a study, hallway, library or sitting room, especially where other historical or documentary pictures hang.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
